Call for Submissions to a New Open Access Black Cultural (Heritage) Zine

NEW YORK CITY March 5, 2025 — The Creative CoLab invites submissions by artists, writers, scholar-practitioners, graduate students, and community leaders to Black Canvases Vol. 1 (ISSN:3066-8484). The zine will explore data and community relations of Black cultural heritage across disciplines, lived experiences, and sectors.

Black Canvases, a new Black cultural (heritage) zine by The Creative CoLab, is meant to share all things Black fashion, culture, data science, digital humanities, digital projects, archival work, art, and BGLAM (Black Galleries Libraries Archives and Museums). It is intended to showcase unpublished work that might be considered unconventional, creative, edgy, or unpublishable especially by academia standards. Black Canvases builds off The CoLab work done during The Relational Possibilities Project (2023 - 2024) to further explore the data and community relations of Black cultural heritage across disciplines, lived experiences, and sectors.

The zine theme for 2025 is express your politics. What emotions do you feel about the current political landscape in the world? What political issues evoke strong emotional responses in you? Black Canvases accepts work written by any ethnicity in the form of digital art, poetry, academic scholarship, short stories, photographs, and vignettes. Visit https://thecreativecolab.substack.com/p/black-canvases for more information.

Send your submissions in by June 11, 2025 by filling out this form: https://tinyurl.com/2025ZineSubmit.
